What is webmail?
Webmail is email you read in a web browser instead of an installed app.
Your email lives in a mailbox on a mail server. Webmail is a website that shows that mailbox in your browser, so you can read and send email from any computer without installing anything. Gmail at mail.google.com, Outlook on the web and Roundcube (the webmail of most cPanel hosting) are all webmail.
Webmail vs an email app
| Webmail | Email app | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Nothing | Once |
| Notifications | Only while the tab is open | Always |
| Stays signed in | Often signs you out | Yes |
| Several addresses | One per tab or login | All together |
| Works on any computer | Yes | Where installed |
